What Are Bonsai Pliers Used For?
Use bonsai pliers to grip and reposition wire ends during wiring, or to twist and tighten wire used to secure a branch or anchor a tree in its pot.
When removing wire, cut each turn with bonsai wire cutters first. Then use pliers to remove short pieces that are difficult to grasp with your fingers.
How to Choose Bonsai Pliers
First, check whether the jaws can reach the wire you want to grip. In crowded branches, jaw thickness matters as well as width. Consider jaw length too if you need to reach farther into the tree.
Next, choose handles that fit your hand and that you can comfortably squeeze while gripping wire. Check that the pliers open and close smoothly and that the gripping surfaces meet without misalignment.

Kaneshin Small Bonsai Pliers No.50A

Kaneshin Large Bonsai Pliers No.49B
These steel pliers are 210mm long. The gripping surfaces meet all the way back, allowing you to hold wire near the pivot as well as at the tips. Gripping the wire closer to the pivot and holding the handles farther back makes use of leverage to apply force, helping you hold the wire securely while bending or twisting it.

These stainless steel pliers have conventional plier-style handles and measure approximately 160mm long, with a weight of about 114g. Along with gripping wire, they have a cutter for copper wire up to 2.6mm in diameter. Choose them if you want one tool for gripping wire and cutting copper wire to length before use.

Using and Caring for Bonsai Pliers
Before moving the pliers, make sure you are gripping only the wire, not bark or buds. Support the branch or trunk and bend or tighten the wire gradually. Avoid bracing the tool against a branch to use it as a lever, or pulling forcefully on cut pieces of wire.
After use, wipe off dirt and moisture and store the pliers dry. Apply a thin coat of rust-preventive oil to steel models and a small amount of oil to the pivot. Do not leave stainless steel models wet either. If the jaws no longer meet correctly or the pliers do not open and close properly, seek advice on repairs.
